MGNREGA workers get 50 more days in Gaja-hit areas

As the workers had already completed 100 days, they will get 50 more days, the collector said. Trichy: The working days of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme were raised to 150 days from 100 in 11 panchayat unions on Saturday. In a statement, district Collector K Rajamani said the total days have been increased to 150 for those registered under the scheme.As per the announcement, the workers registered within the panchayat unions such as Anthanallur, Manikandam, Thiruverumbur, Manapparai, Marungapuri, Vaiyampatti, Lalgudi, Mannachanallur, Musiri, Thottiam and Thuraiyur in Trichy district will get 50 more days. This comes in the likelyhood of increased demand for wage employment on public works following the Gaja onslaught in the agriculture lands of 12 districts..Moreover, the farmers and their various unions stressed the need for the provision of establishing additional employment above 100 days per household under MGNREGA Act in notified cyclone-affected areas in delta districts.Based on their demand, the department of agriculture and farmers welfare had recommended extending the benefit of an additional 50 days of employment per household under the MGNREGA.
