Trichy: Vigil locals and police in Perambalur thwarted a 22-year-old man’s attempt to steal money from an automated teller machine (ATM) of a private bank in Perambalur town in the early hours of Tuesday. The accused, identified as D Dhanush is employed as a security supervisor in Perambalur government hospital. During his failed attempt he had assaulted and injured one home guard to escape from being caught by the police and public.Police sources said that passers-by in Venkatesapuram locality alerted the Perambalur police on seeing a youth attempting to break open the ATM situated in a commercial complex at around 4am. As Kannan, 35, home guard on surveillance duty reached the ATM room, Dhanush, a native of Namakkal attacked him with a wooden stick.Kannan, who sustained injuries on his head raised an alarm and the accused was nabbed from fleeing. Police suspect that the accused could have attempted the crime while on his way home after completing his shift at the hospital. Kannan was admitted at the Perambalur GH.Dhanush had also sustained injuries in his failed attempt. Perambalur police said the accused is being treated at the GH for his injuries. A case has also been registered.
