Trichy: Villagers captured a 42-year-old man and thrashed him for attempting to kidnap a woman with learning difficulties at Nadupatti village near Vaiyampatti on Dindigul to Trichy road on Wednesday.Angry residents of the village chased down Ismail, 42, a resident of Anna Nagar in Thennur and rescued the 20-year-old woman from his car near toll gate at Ponnampatti.Ismail was on his way back to Trichy from Dindigul by his car on Wednesday morning. As he crossed the Nadupatti village, he saw the woman standing on the roadside near the government higher secondary school. She was a daughter of a couple in the village.Since the woman seemed to be mentally unstable, he stopped his car and coerced her to get into his car by offering chocolates to her. It was alleged that he pushed her into the car and moved the car swiftly.Some of students in the school witnessed the scene and passed on the information to her family and the villagers. They also noted down the registration number of the car.On getting the information, some of the villagers took their two-wheelers and chased the car. As Ismail came to know that he was being followed, he started to speed his car. The bikers surrounded him near the toll gate and caught him.Villagers thrashed him and informed the Vaiyampatti police. Since police made a arrived late to the spot, the public staged a road blockade on the national highway causing a traffic jam. Police convinced them and took custody of the man. People also dispersed from the spot. Police took Ismail for interrogation. It was said that he already had several theft cases pending in the police stations in the city. He tried to kidnap the girl with the intention of sexually abusing her.
