Corpn takes up repair work on damaged footpaths in city

Trichy: The Trichy Corporation has started repair works on a section of the footpath near the government hospital here. Gradually, damaged pedestrian platforms in other parts of the city would be repaired, the civic body said.Although commuters have been encouraged to opt for environment-friendly modes, infrastructure such as footpath and bicycle tracks are amiss in the city. Such dangers should also be addressed,” said P Vasanth, a resident of Warners road. Since the existing footpaths are either damaged with metal rods jutting out or encroached by commercial establishments, a majority of the pedestrians in the city are seen walking on the roads.“Metal bars form the broken slabs are invisible at night. TrichyCorporation sources said that the pedestrian platforms opposite the Trichy Government Hospital are being renovated for the time being, and added that Thennur high road stretch would be soon taken up in the coming phases.

Though developing new parks and beautification activities were given greater emphasis, residents have been lamenting about the civic body’s lack of attention in improving basic infrastructure for pedestrians.As frequent complaints were lodged about the poor condition of slabs on the footpath opposite the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, corporation officials from the K Abishekapuram zone have taken up repair work for more than 150m. “RCC slabs with manholes are being set up over the stormwater drains to enable pedestrians move along Bharathidasan road,” an official source with Trichy Corporation said.Welcoming the repair work, locals had sought similar action along the Royals road model park near Central bus stand, which attracts hundreds of peopel each day, and Thennur high road dotted with private hospitals and clinics.
