Pudukottai girl wins silver in weightlifting at nat’l championship

She said that athletes from Maharashtra gave her a good fight, and she managed to grab the second spot. But I took it as my PET was insisting me to take up the sport. He has been training another team of girls for the same event.Aspiring to bag an Olympic medal and start coaching young girls in future, Priya’s immediate goal is to win gold in upcoming national level events.

Being the only girl from the district representing the state, she said accomplished this with a mere 8 months of training.She thanked her coach K Muthuramalingam also a physical education teacher (PET) of her school who identified her talent and encouraged her to take up weightlifting.I was hardly interested in weightlifting neither my parents were in favour of it. But I took it as my PET was insisting me to take up the sport. Though I was hesitant in the beginning, slowly I gained interest. I started working for over 4 hours a day and now I stand as a national level medal winner, she said.A silver and bronze medal in the state level championship ensured a slot in the national level tournament for her. She said that athletes from Maharashtra gave her a good fight, and she managed to grab the second spot. She won the medal with 45 kg snatch and 60 kg jerk lifts.Muthuramalingam found her ideal for the sport and she took picked up fast with a determination to win medals. He has been training another team of girls for the same event.Aspiring to bag an Olympic medal and start coaching young girls in future, Priya’s immediate goal is to win gold in upcoming national level events.
