Minor girl held for possession of illicit arrack, gets bail

Nagapattinam: Sleuths of the prohibition and enforcement wing (PEW) in Mayiladuthurai arrested a minor girl for possession of 110 litres of arrack on Thursday. As part of the crackdown on illicit liquor sellers, police also tried to arrest the woman. The raid was necessitated following instructions given by top police officials from Chennai after Kilvelur constituency MLA U Mathivanan of DMK raked up the issue of prevalence of illicit liquor in this constituency.Police said the girl’s mother was notorious for selling illicit liquor in the area for many years. The girl was released on bail later in the evening.The PEW sleuths caught the girl at her house in a village near Kuthalam in Nagapattinam district and seized the arrack stored in sachets for sale in the black market. Since she absconded, they detained and arrested the girl.Police registered a case under two sections of Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act.

Police suspect that the arrack contains some poisonous content.A PEW official said the arrack was smuggled into Nagapattinam from Puducherry where the sale of arrack is legal.Thursday’s arrest is part of the whirlwind raid by the PEW wing in areas around Mayiladuthurai for the past one week. The raid was necessitated following instructions given by top police officials from Chennai after Kilvelur constituency MLA U Mathivanan of DMK raked up the issue of prevalence of illicit liquor in this constituency.Police said the girl’s mother was notorious for selling illicit liquor in the area for many years. As part of the crackdown on illicit liquor sellers, police also tried to arrest the woman. Since she absconded, they detained and arrested the girl.Police registered a case under two sections of Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act. The girl was produced before the juvenile justice board (JJB), which released the girl on bail after hearing her case.A JJB source said that they won’t keep such girls in the government observation home considering the possibilities of rehabilitating them.In the past one week, the PEW in Mayiladuthurai busted several illicit liquor rackets and arrested around 50 people besides seizing around 5,000 litres of arrack from them.
