Trichy: The dormant state of village child protection committee (VCPC) in the absence of local body representatives left the children in rural areas in a lurch as they do not have avenues to raise issues related to their rights in Trichy district.Child safety audit at Navalpattu village, an initiative by community renovation and organisation advancement trust (COROAT) in Trichy, exposed the abandoned functions of VCPC, which is supposed to act as custodian of child rights in all the villages across the state.Despite the state government making it mandatory for the committee to function diligently, there has not been any meeting of the stake holders.

Which has left the rights of the children uncared for,” said founder trustee of COROAT, M Padmavathy on Thursday.The objective of the safety audit was to check whether the children enjoyed the right to live, to grow, to safety and right to participation.Navalpattu was the choice for the first child safety audit as it is a locality in Thiruverumbur taluk where the cases of abuse of children in various forms have been reported.The child safety audit conducted at Navalpattu village on February 16, 2019 witnessed the participation of 18 parents and seven children, who sat through four hours of the audit process.The audit identified 14 types of issues affecting the children in Navalpattu village. The issues ranged from nuisance of liquor shop near the school to the increasing number of school dropouts turning child labourers.A member of state commission for protection of child rights (SCPCR), P Mohan and an officer P Srividya from district child protection unit (DCPU) also interacted with the parents during the audit.“The adolescent boys are gradually getting addicted to liquor in the area. TASMAC bar near the school is said to be the reason. We are planning for de-addiction programme for them soon,” said Mohan.Srividya passed a resolution in the meeting that the committee will be convened by the panchayat clerk in place of the president.The organisation has planned to conduct the audit in few more villages and frame guidelines for the functioning of the committees before sending them to all the stake holders including the district collector to draw their attention.
