‘Teachers musn’t cover up child abuse by colleagues’

Trichy: Underlining incidences of child abuse at the hands of teachers, speakers at the ChildLine workshop for school teachers insisted on revealing the incidents to the officials concerned instead of covering up.“Please don’t try to save the perpetrators of child abuse if the abuser is your colleague well-known to you. Instead, teachers should give more attention to them and encourage them to study well,” he said. If a student performs low, the teacher should not treat him/her in such a manner that they lose hope on education. She termed the teachers as mothers of the children in school, and asked them to impart gender equality.A member of child welfare committee (CWC), Trichy, advocate N Krishnamoorthy detailed the role of teachers in ensuring that there are no dropouts from school. If you come to know about the incident as a teacher, it should be reported to the head of the institution or the higher officials.

The person may be good at teaching. If you come to know about the incident as a teacher, it should be reported to the head of the institution or the higher officials. Don’t shed your responsibility,” said former member of Tamil Nadu State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TNSCPCR), advocate T Jayanthirani.The workshop organised by ChildLine nodal agency at the Bishop Heber College here on Friday saw the participation of around 25 government school teachers from the district. The one-day programme headed by its director J Godwin Prem Singh talked about Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, Child Marriages Act, national child rights policy and system mechanism, out of school children and child labour.The speakers also explained to the teachers the nitty-gritties of child rights, as most of them had very little idea about the right.Jayanthirani stressed on the role of teachers in ensuring the developmental right of children.
