23 bonded labourers, including 7 children, rescued from farms

Trichy: About 23 bonded labourers , who were subjected to toil in the sugarcane farms in Thanjavur were rescued by team of officials on Thursday.The rescued labourers include 11 men, five women and seven children.
The innocent people would also suffer in silence without raising any objection,” said Krishnan.The case of the children of the bonded labourers was also pitiful.
They were native of Karamani Kuppam, Cuddalore and Vazhudhavur areas.
The broker has absconded already.
The rescue operation took place at their settlement at Nayakarapatti on the Thanjavur and Pudukottai border.Acting on a tip-off, a team of officials including tahsildar from Thanjavur, workers of National Adivaasi Solidarity Council visited their tents on Thursday afternoon and rescued them.Inquiry with people revealed that they were working as bonded labourers in the sugarcane farms in Kurungulam area for the past six months.A broker had brought them to work on the promise of payig them between Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000 per family.
