“We have also levied and collected Rs 20,000 as penalties from the shops for circulating the banned plastic products,” an official with the Trichy Corporation said.Though plastic products were seized, Ponmalai residents expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of simultaneous inspections across the city to prevent traders from temporarily disbanding their stocks to evade punishment.
“If corporation officials inspect the shops across Ponmalai, Ponmalaipatti, and Subramaniapuram at the same time, they can seize a lot more banned plastic products,” KC Neelamegam, a resident of Ponmalaipatti said.Taking cue of the public opinion, corporation officials said that they would inspect the Ponmalai zone localities simultaneously.
Trichy: The Trichy Corporation on Thursday seized around 25kg of banned plastic products, mostly carry bags, from shops in Ponmalai zone.According to sanitary department officials, Ponmalai zone had received complaints of carry bags, cups and plates made of plastic still in use in several shops near TVS tollgate locality.During a surprise inspection on Ponmalai-Madurai stretch of Chennai-Madurai national highway, as many as six of the 12 shops inspected had stocked the banned products.Apparently, the civic body officials seized 25kg of plastic carry bags from the shops.
