Trichy: A section of regular teachers from Bharathidasan University have opposed the idea of inducting 31 regular faculty members from constituent colleges to the university system after the conversion of constituent colleges into government colleges. The issue was raised by a section of teachers in the syndicate meeting of Bharathidasan University that took place on Saturday. However, the demand was turned down as it was against the policy decision taken by the state government. The state government had, in June last year, announced conversion of 41 constituent colleges run by eight state-run universities under director of collegiate education. Deciding to convert these colleges in phased manner due to financial constraints, the state government had, a few weeks back, decided to convert 14 constituent colleges in the first phase among which four colleges come under Bharathidasan University. The state government had passed orders creating posts for teaching and non-teaching staffs in these colleges. While the government is going to call for fresh recruitment for the posts created, existing regular staffs need to be absorbed back to the university system.“But such a move would affect the seniority of existing teachers in various departments. Besides, it would also lead to confusion as these teachers were working in the college system, which is entirely different from the university system,” said a faculty from the university. While this was the stand of most of the faculty members in the university, a few syndicate members were also of the view that they cannot be sent elsewhere as they were recruited by the university as per the same norms followed for the recruitment of university teachers.Vice chancellor of Bharathidasan University, P Manisankar said that same is the case in rest of the universities and government has already passed an order in this regard.
