Lok Sabha elections: No-show by candidates on day 1 of nomination in central region

Here the fight is between S Ramalingam of DMK and S Aasaimani of AIADMK besides AMMK’s S Senthamizhan. AMMK candidate N Thangavel is also in the fray.In Thanjavur constituency, the contest is between DMK’s S S Palanimanickam and AIADMK ally Tamil Maanila Congress candidate N R Natarajan. Here the AMMK candidate is P Murugesan.AIADMK candidate Thazhai M Saravanan will take on M Selvarasu of the CPI and AMMK candidate advocate T Sengodi in Nagapattinam (SC) constituency.Mayiladuthurai is the only constituency in the central region where DMK and AIADMK face head on. TRICHY: The first day of filing of nominations for the April 18 Lok Sabha poll, which began on Tuesday saw no candidate turning up in any of the six constituencies including Trichy in the central region of the state.Trichy, Karur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai parliamentary constituencies saw no candidate filing their nominations at the office of the district election officer or assistant returning officer and revenue divisional officer of the respective districts.According to the Election Commission of India , candidates can file nominations from March 19 to March 26. The election department officials in all six constituencies declared that no one submitted nomination on the first day till 3pm.Anticipating the visit of the candidates, police beefed up security in all the election offices in the districts.In Trichy, while DMDK’s Dr V Elangovan of AIADMK alliance and AMMK’s Sarubala Thondaiman have started campaigning, the Congress-DMK alliance is yet to announce its candidate.In the Perambalur constituency, the fight is between AIADMK candidate N R Sivapathi, IJK candidate in DMK alliance T R Pachamuthu and AMMK candidate M Rajasekaran.In Karur, Lok Sabha deputy speaker M Thambidurai of AIADMK is contesting against Congress candidate S Jothimani.
