Trichy: AIADMK and DMK candidates submitted their nomination papers for the by-election to Thanjavur assembly constituency on Friday while AMMK released its candidate for Tiruvarur as well as Thanjavur assembly seats.R Gandhi, 55, filed his nomination as the AIADMK candidate in Thanjavur. A resident of new housing board quarters in Thanjavur, he is into construction business. The MA graduate with BEd claimed that he had no criminal cases filed against him. DMK candidate T K G Neelamegam, 55, who also submitted his nomination, is a resident of R G Kovil street in Thanjavur. Neelamegam’s affidavit filed along with the nomination mentions his qualification as “Class X (fail)”. He also claimed that there was no criminal case against him.AMMK has fielded M Rengasamy who had won the seat on AIADMK ticket in 2016 but lost his post after being disqualified by the speaker under Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (disqualification on grounds of defection) Rules 1986. That was in September 2017 for showing dissent against the AIADMK government and switching sides to the Dhinakaran-led faction. He was one of the eight MLAs who broke away from AIADMK and joined Dhinakaran.AMMK has fielded its district secretary S Kamaraj in Tiruvarur assembly constituency where DMK’s Poondi Kalaivanan and AIADMK’s R Jeevanandam are also in fray. DMK is making an allout attempt to win the seat which fell vacant with the demise of former DMK chief M Karunanidhi in August 2018. As the birth place of Karunanidhi, Tiruvarur offers a strong base for DMK. But it is not going to be all that easy for the party with the AIADMK and AMMK getting ready to offer a tough fight.
