Trichy: Insisting on the need to wake up to life-threatening cancers, Indo German Endoscopy Laparoscopic Society (IGELS) demonstrated live laparoscopic surgery on a cervical cancer patient in Trichy and telecast it to doctors in Sharjah University, here on Friday. The objective of the live surgery was to drive home the message that a complicated surgery had now become easier with the advent of laparoscopic surgery for cancer. IGELS consists of surgeons from Trichy and University of Freiburg in Germany. Now it is being done through laparoscopy as minimally invasive surgery. Though the rate of incidence of such cancers remains one in hundred approximately in cities like Trichy, timely diagnosis could bring out the real situation. “It was done as open surgery earlier.

“It was done as open surgery earlier. Now it is being done through laparoscopy as minimally invasive surgery. The programme is also aimed at creating a platform for sharing of knowledge in advanced techniques,” said laparoscopic surgeon and founding treasurer of IGELS, Dr K Rajavel. The live surgery was done at Modular theatre in Velan Hospitals in Trichy by Dr G Senthilkumar and televised to doctors attending a conference in Sharjah University which also organized a hands-on surgery there on Friday. IGELS consists of surgeons from Trichy and University of Freiburg in Germany. Stating that women above 40 years of age were vulnerable to breast and cervical cancers, Dr Rajavel expressed concern over the inhibition among women to voluntarily go through basic diagnosis for early identification.“People are still hesitant to come forward to take up Pap Smear test which will expose doubtful cells. Such lack of understanding among the people result in advanced malignancy,” he said adding that they should undergo the test at least once in two years though once in a year is advisable. Though the rate of incidence of such cancers remains one in hundred approximately in cities like Trichy, timely diagnosis could bring out the real situation. Human Papilomavirus (HPV) remains one of the most common causes for cervical cancers as it is transmitted sexually. While claiming that the diseases are preventable, Dr Rajavel said there were 75 % to 80% chances of survival for five years after surgery and 60% to 70% chances of survival for 10 years.
