Trichy: With mercury hovering beyond 39 degree Celsius and weather watchers predicting an intense heat from next week, Lok Sabha candidates are bracing for a punishing campaign ahead under stifling condition.From making modifications to election campaign vehicles to changing schedule to afford breaks, candidates who run out of time are using own strategies to keep campaigns alive in humid condition.DMDK candidate Dr V Elangovan who commences his campaign from 7 am has made modifications to his cargo van campaign vehicle. To shield from sun while appearing for public, he has installed a makeshift shelter to offer shade in the noon so that the campaign can continue despite hot weather.“We are running short of time to cover all the places falling under Trichy Lok Sabha segment. We cannot afford to rest much in the noon,” a source in DMDK camp said. The AIADMK front leaves only 30 minutes break for lunch and continues the campaign from the covered cargo van equipped with loudspeakers.The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) candidate Sarubala Thondaiman has been starting her election campaign by around 7 to 8 am by giving a brief break during the lunch. “By campaigning on foot in the morning and evening, we spend the noon in the campaign vehicle. We cannot afford to spend the limited time in resting,” a functionary with AMMK said.Sources in Congress, which fielded Su Thirunavukkarasar, said the party will cover all panchayats in one assembly constituency at a time, thus leaving rest time only during lunch. Since only two weeks and a few days left for the candidates to meet and canvass for votes, parties claimed that they are undaunted by Trichy’s infamous sultry summer.
