Cargo import facility opened at Trichy airport

TRICHY: A dedicated cargo import facility was inaugurated at Trichy International Airport on Friday. "While import was not promoted all these years at Trichy airport, it is now in the hands of customs to encourage imports which brings revenue to both customs and the airport," honorary member of Trichy intra city development endeavor (Tides) H Ubaidullah. Notification for courier operation came in 2013.Trichy airport director K Gunasekaran said operators would be called for a meeting on starting courier operations. The 190 square metre facility was built at a cost of Rs 20 lakh.As of now, the Trichy airport receive an average four tonne of cargo per month where the import for the year 2016-17 stands at 52 tonne.After inaugurating the import facility, additional commissioner of customs Trichy V Siva Kumar told airport officials that the much-awaited courier operation would start in two weeks.
