Boy drowning case: Resort owner, manager arrested

The Tiruchi Rural Police has arrested the owner of a private resort on the city’s outskirts and its manager after a 14-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool inside the resort on Sunday. On a complaint from a relative of the victim, the police arrested the resort owner R. Sivabalakumar (46) and its manager B. Ganesalingam (56) and remanded them to judicial custody. Syed Abudhahir - went to the pool for a swim along with two of his friends to the resort at Vayalur. After completion of post mortem, the body of the boy was handed over to his parents residing at Dhanarathinam Nagar here. Police said the resort authorities had thrown open the swimming pool to public a few months ago and fixed separate tariff for those below 10 years, 15 years and adults.

The tragedy took place in evening hours when the boy –M. Syed Abudhahir - went to the pool for a swim along with two of his friends to the resort at Vayalur. The boy who resided in the city was studying eighth standard in a private school here. Police sources said the boy who ventured into the pool along with his friends drowned some time later. The tragedy apparently came to be known when the boy was not found. The body was later retrieved from the pool and sent for a post mortem to the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital in Tiruchi. On receipt of information about the boy’s death his near ones assembled at the resort prompting the intervention of the police. One of the near ones of the boy allegedly damaged a glass to vent his ire over the death and the sheer negligence on the part of the resort authorities. On a complaint from a relative of the victim, the police arrested the resort owner R. Sivabalakumar (46) and its manager B. Ganesalingam (56) and remanded them to judicial custody. The Somarasampet police registered a case against the two accused. Police said the resort authorities had thrown open the swimming pool to public a few months ago and fixed separate tariff for those below 10 years, 15 years and adults. There was no swimming coach for the pool and the resort authorities had allegedly allowed people exceeding the permitted limit at a time. There were nearly 40 persons in the pool at the time of the incident on Sunday, said a police officer. After completion of post mortem, the body of the boy was handed over to his parents residing at Dhanarathinam Nagar here. The officer said a report in connection with the incident has been sent to the Revenue Divisional Officer, Srirangam for appropriate action against the resort.
