Uncertainty writ large over MBBS applicants' faces

Clearly, the confusion caused by National Eligibility cum Entrance Test has dampened hopes of securing medical admissions despite the government earmarking 85% seats to state board students. The reservation for state board students was good news. Further, they issued tokens to 304 candidates for government quota applications and 330 tokens for self-financing college applications which are expected to be issued to them. I would have definitely got an MBBS seat based on my marks in plus two. The latest reservation has diminished her chance of getting MBBS seat.

TRICHY: There was not much excitement among the students on the first day of the distribution of applications for MBBS admission in government and self-financing medical colleges at the KAP Viswanatham government medical college (KAPVGMC) here on Tuesday. Clearly, the confusion caused by National Eligibility cum Entrance Test has dampened hopes of securing medical admissions despite the government earmarking 85% seats to state board students."I have scored 1,186 marks in state board public exam this year but only 271 in NEET. I would have definitely got an MBBS seat based on my marks in plus two. Now, I am not sure if my NEET score would get me the seat in government quota," said RA Prabhu from Trichy.Tamil Nadu government reserved 85 % seats to Tamil Nadu state board students based on the marks scored in NEET. Only 15 % of the seats will be allotted to those who studied under CBSE and other boards. Most of the students who turned up to get their applications on the first day were from the state board syllabus. "My NEET score is 177 while plus two mark is 1,150. The reservation for state board students was good news. Yet, I have very little hope of getting the MBBS seat in government quota," said another MBBS aspirant AV Lokesh from Trichy. The students in the state board syllabus felt that they would have scored better marks had there been proper coaching in the schools for NEET. " I was able to score 151 marks in NEET this year with my own preparation though I completed my plus two with 996 marks last year. We could have achieved good marks if the schools had provided better coaching," said S Madhina Shifaya from Trichy.Meanwhile resentment is brewing among CBSE students against the 85 % quota for state board students for MBBS which some of them are even planning to challenge in court. "My daughter, a CBSE student, scored 384 marks in NEET. The latest reservation has diminished her chance of getting MBBS seat. We are disappointed and have decided to move the court," said a parent in Trichy on condition of anonymity. On the first day, KAPVGMC issued 250 applications to government quota seats and 100 applications to self-finance quota seats. Further, they issued tokens to 304 candidates for government quota applications and 330 tokens for self-financing college applications which are expected to be issued to them. Separate applications for the government quotas and self-financing quotas have also not gone down well with the students and parents.
