UDAIPUR: The campuses of the constituent colleges of Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU) and Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology (MPUAT) in Udaipur, are buzzing with activity, as students are set to elect their representatives in the student unions’ polls, which are to take place on Aug 31.Approximately 10,000 voters from the four constituent colleges would vote to select the president, vice-president, secretary and general secretary of MLSUSU, as well as the college-level cabinets, while around three thousand students will be voting at MPUAT, to elect its student union representatives. The first phase of the election process began on Thursday, with voters’ lists displayed at concerned colleges.Meanwhile, student activity has increased at the campuses, with potential candidates listening to students’ demand and assuring them to address those if they are voted to their desired posts. While the ABVP has declared Himanshu Bagri as its candidate for the coveted president’s post in the central cabinet of MLSU, the other two groups NSUI and CSS (Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti) are yet to announce their candidates, which is expected by late Thursday night. Himanshu’s candidature came as a disappointment for another ticket aspirant Nikhil Raj Singh, and speculations were abound that Singh could be announced as the NSUI candidate. At commerce college, the situation grew tense for a while, when two opposing groups came face-to-face and raised slogans against each other. Sensing the situation, Bhupalpura police rushed to the spot and waved lathi to disperse the mob. “It was not a serious incident. Some students messed up with each other and so we drove them out of the campus. None has been detained, no complaint has been lodged,” Harendra Singh Sauda, the SHO said. The university administration is taking all efforts to conduct the polls as per the guidelines of the Lyngdoh committee, and due to the strictness, pamphlets and posters are not to be seen in the campuses, contrary to last year when not an inch of the walls was left uncovered with election posters.
