UDAIPUR: A 42-year-old BJP leader was killed in broad daylight on Saturday in Pratapgarh , triggering panic in the area and forcing the administration to deploy reserve police.The victim, identified as Samrath Kumawat (42), was district vice-president of the OBC cell of BJP and a resident of Sanchai village. A child, who was standing nearby and witnessed the grisly murder, informed the local people who gathered at the spot. With the election code of conduct in force, people moving around with firearms is a serious matter, villagers claimed.Former CM Ashok Gehlot tweeted about the incident, “I condemn the brutal killing of BJP’s Samrath Kumawat in Pratapgarh. The victim, shocked by the sudden attack, did not resist or call for help.

Kumawat was going towards Pratapgarh from his village around 11am to buy fertilizers and seeds. He was on his two-wheeler when three men on a bike stopped him on the Jhansadi road.The third men fired at Kumawat and the person seated in the middle got down from the bike and slit his throat with a sharp weapon. The victim, shocked by the sudden attack, did not resist or call for help. A child, who was standing nearby and witnessed the grisly murder, informed the local people who gathered at the spot. Infuriated over the murder, villagers blocked the road and refused to shift the body for postmortem while demanding immediate arrest of assailants.People protested against the poor law and order situation and alleged that criminals were moving around boldly, killing people in broad daylight. With the election code of conduct in force, people moving around with firearms is a serious matter, villagers claimed.Former CM Ashok Gehlot tweeted about the incident, “I condemn the brutal killing of BJP’s Samrath Kumawat in Pratapgarh. Perpetrators of such heinous crime must be severely punished. The pathetic condition of law and order in the state is a matter of grave concern.” Additional SP Ratan Lal Bhargava said additional forces have been deployed. He said the victim had been getting threats for some time.
