Plaster from ceiling falls on girl student at VMC school

Vadodara: Plaster of the ceiling of a municipal school in the Waghodiya Road area of the city fell injuring a girl student on Friday morning. “The contractor had advised that the ceiling fan should not be used for a few days till the material dries and gains strength. The plaster from the ceiling came off and the ceiling fan that was fixed at the same spot hung precariously from the roof.Functionaries of the primary education committee of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) that runs the school rushed to the school in wake of the incident. The ceiling from which the material fell was also fixed recently.The incident took place in the class V classroom of the school when the class was in session. The school is undergoing renovation.

The injuries to the girl were minor and she had to be given first aid.Chairman of the primary education committee Meenaba Parmar said that the school is undergoing renovation and the ceiling was repaired only a couple of days back. “The contractor had advised that the ceiling fan should not be used for a few days till the material dries and gains strength. But someone switched on the fan leading to the incident. The girl only had a minor bruise as the material was thrown around due to the moving fan,” Parmar said.The opposition in the committee has, however, raised questions about the quality of work. Opposition member Nalin Mehta told media persons at the school that only the administration and officials knew what kind of work had been done at the site.Parmar said that she had asked the engineers to inquire into the matter. She added that moisture was a major problem in the school and surrounding areas.
