BJP bags president’s post in Godhra municipality

The BJP got 30 votes indicating that its flock had remained intact.Police personnel have been deployed at the residences of seven councillors from the minority community in Godhra who supported the BJP. All the 26 other corporators are independents including 21 from the minority community. The independents had stuck together in 2015 and ensured that BJP stayed out of power.But this time around the BJP managed to get the support of 12 independents. Eight of these independents are from the minority community. Vadodara: After intense drama that lasted two weeks, the election for the Godhra municipality president were held on Tuesday where BJP managed a victory with the support of independents including those from the minority community.The BJP has 18 members in the municipality that has a strength of 44 corporators.

The BJP had taken all its corporators and seven independents to an undisclosed location ahead of the polls.In the polls held on Tuesday morning at the Sardarnagar Hall in Godhra, Ilendra Panchal was elected as the president while Deepak Soni was elected as the vice president of the civic body. The BJP got 30 votes indicating that its flock had remained intact.Police personnel have been deployed at the residences of seven councillors from the minority community in Godhra who supported the BJP. The reason for the step taken by the district police is the fact that there was anger against them in some pockets and their effigies were also burnt on Monday. Messages condemning those corporators who had joined hands with the BJP were also circulating in the town. Sources said that the security will stay in place for the next few days till tempers did not cool down.
