Clashes mar fragile peace in Walled City second time in week

Vadodara: Communal violence broke again in the Walled City areas again late on Tuesday when mobs of two communities pelted stones at each other.Trouble first broke out in Wadi and soon spread to Yakutpura and Fatehpura, where rioting mobs even attacked policemen. No arrests were made till late Wednesday night.The trouble began with rumours of a boy belonging to a particular community being beaten up. A group of men came out on the streets to protest against it and approached the police. “We took control of the situation, but after a while stone-pelting started in Yakutpura,” Saroj Kumari, deputy commissioner of police (zone 4) said.“When our teams reached Yakutpura, they came under the attack from the mob. Following this, we had to lob teargas shells,” DG Sosa, inspector, City police station, said. Police sub-inspector Arun Mishra, who was also attacked, reportedly even pulled out his service revolver to control the rioters. An SRP jawan Sanjay Rao, who was on duty, suffered injuries.Police lobbed three teargas shells to disperse the mobs. Eight residents of Yakutpura have been booked in connection with the incident. Also, a separate complaint of attempt to murder has been registered at the City police station against four unidentified persons who attacked and injured a commuter Kapil More near Sarasiya lake when he was on his way to home.When asked about the trigger behind the clashes, Sosa said it was a fallout of communal riots that happened near Nyay Mandir on Eid on June 16. A procession taken out by Rajput Karni Sena to celebrate the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap had led to trouble last Saturday. Some members of the procession changed the route and reached Dudhwala Mohalla, where stone-pelting started. A police complaint filed in connection with the incident stated that members of the procession began stone-pelting and shouted provocative slogans. “Saturday’s incident may have led to communal tension that took place on Tuesday night,” Sosa said.The police have increased patrolling in the walled city to avert further tension.Cops chase rumoursPolice had a tough time dealing with rumours on Tuesday night. Senior police officials said rumours regarding stabbing and assault kept doing rounds till late in the night and it kept the cops on tenterhooks. “The police teams reached the spot where information of stabbing came from, only to realize that it was a rumour,” a police official said.
