Now, cholera cases erupt in city’s gastro-affected area

VADODARA: The situation of water-borne diseases in the Navapura area of the city continued to remain grim as two more cases of cholera were reported from the affected area. With this the total number of gastroenteritis cases in the area went up to 66 even as 16 remained hospitalised.VMC officials said that one of the cholera cases was from the Shiyabaug area while the other was from the Navapura area. Officials added that the Kahar Mohalla in Navapura was the worst affected area. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is struggling with leaking water supply lines in the area that led to the situation.VMC sources said that 11 new cases of gastroenteritis were reported from Navapura area and three persons were hospitalised. The civic body continued to supply water to the area using tankers.Teams of doctors of the civic body checked 1,790 houses and examined 8,930 persons during their door-to-door visits on Saturday.

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is struggling with leaking water supply lines in the area that led to the situation.VMC sources said that 11 new cases of gastroenteritis were reported from Navapura area and three persons were hospitalised. With this the total number of gastroenteritis cases in the area went up to 66 even as 16 remained hospitalised.VMC officials said that one of the cholera cases was from the Shiyabaug area while the other was from the Navapura area. State epidemiologist Dr Dhimant Thakkar rushed to the city in wake of the outbreak.The top brass of the VMC as well as Akota BJP MLA Seema Mohile also visited the area to monitor ongoing work. Residents from the affected areas made irate representations to the functionaries during their visit.VMC officials said that 10 leakages had been identified so far in the water supply pipelines in the locality. One of these had been repaired while work was on to take care of the remaining leakages. Officials added that the Kahar Mohalla in Navapura was the worst affected area. The civic body continued to supply water to the area using tankers.Teams of doctors of the civic body checked 1,790 houses and examined 8,930 persons during their door-to-door visits on Saturday. The exercise is expected to continue in the coming days to ensure that any case of an ailment is identified in time and treatment is offered.
