No let-up as more fall ill with gastroenteritis

Vadodara: The Navapura area of Vadodara continued to reel under the gastroenteritis outbreak with six fresh cases being reported from there on Monday. He added that the water supply pipeline network in several parts of the city was old and needed replacements. The civic body is, however, struggling to identify the source of leakages in the water supply lines in the area.Sources said that there were multiple leaks that came to light during the drive by the civic body to check the water supply network in wake of the gastroenteritis outbreak. The new case from Navapura was that of a two-year-old girl who had tested positive on Saturday, but the case was reported on Monday. Even the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials were not aware of the fresh case.SSGH data reveals that in all seven persons tested positive for cholera in the city on Saturday and Sunday.

A child from the area also tested positive for cholera at the SSG Hospital (SSGH).While the number of cases went down as compared to Sunday when eight new cases were reported, the fresh cholera case has raised concerns. The new case from Navapura was that of a two-year-old girl who had tested positive on Saturday, but the case was reported on Monday. Even the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials were not aware of the fresh case.SSGH data reveals that in all seven persons tested positive for cholera in the city on Saturday and Sunday. These included the girl from Navapura and six others from different parts of the city.According to the VMC, seven persons remained hospitalised from the previous cases even as two others were admitted on Monday.The VMC continues to remain on its toes in the area and has been supplying water using tankers. The civic body is, however, struggling to identify the source of leakages in the water supply lines in the area.Sources said that there were multiple leaks that came to light during the drive by the civic body to check the water supply network in wake of the gastroenteritis outbreak. According to officials, six leaks were repaired on Monday. One leak was also identified in the water pipeline on the Navapura main road.Parallel to the water supply network, the civic body is also working on the drainage network in the area and cleaning it.The VMC opposition slammed the civic body and met the commissioner to make representations regarding the situation.Opposition leader Chandrakant Shrivastava said that complaints of water contamination were coming from various areas of the city, but the VMC’s response was slack. He added that the water supply pipeline network in several parts of the city was old and needed replacements.
