Bapod police said the gang cheated people in four states by using a simple modus operandi. After committing the crime, they used to split the cash.“The gang used to keep a watch on ATMs in secluded places that are not visited frequently by the customers. They used to wait for someone who was either aged or looked gullible. When the victim entered the ATM booth, they used to follow him or her inside and stand right behind in queue,” said Saroj Kumari, DCP (crime).When the victim entered the PIN, the person standing right behind used to mark it. As the transaction proceeded, he used to tell the victims that their transaction wasn’t happening properly as it was taking too much time. The victim, who were not well-versed with ATM functions, were then told to press the yellow button for cancelling the transaction.“The accused used to ask the victim to step aside so that he could withdraw money. Many victims didn’t know that the transaction continues by pressing yellow button. The accused used to enter the PIN that he had marked earlier and withdraw money from the victim’s account,” Kumari told TOI. “Most of the victims used to realize much later that they had been conned.The gang used to withdraw amounts between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 from the victim’s account. The police said that this gang had committed such crimes in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and in three cities of Gujarat including Surat, Bharuch and Vadodara.
