Day-long downpour keeps city on edge

District collector Shalini Agrawal said that high alert was issued in five villages of Dabhoi taluka, but the water began receding by evening. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple near Lalbaug was submerged in waist-deep waters along with the adjacent lake that overflowed on the road.Rain water flooded basements of many commercial complexes in the old city.

Vadodara: The second bout of torrential rainfall within fortnight left large areas of the city heavily waterlogged and paralysed normal life on Thursday.Even as wet weather prevailed throughout Wednesday night, Barodians woke up to very heavy rainfall that only kept intensifying as the morning progressed. Disaster management officials said that between 8 pm on Wednesday and 8 pm on Thursday, the city got nearly 100 mm rain.Heavy to very heavy rains are predicted today also.Most of the main roads in the Walled City got completely submerged in waters and areas like Alkapuri, Sayajigunj and Jail Road too witnessed severe water-logging. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple near Lalbaug was submerged in waist-deep waters along with the adjacent lake that overflowed on the road.Rain water flooded basements of many commercial complexes in the old city. It was a tough time for school children who had to wade through flooded roads to reach their early morning schools.As many as 15 trees also collapsed in areas like Kashi Vishwanath Temple Road, Akota, Race Course Road, BPC Road, Atladara, Manjalpur, Navayard, Makarpura, Gorwa and Gotri.Some roads in the city were badly damaged including the busy BPC Road and Jetalpur Road. Water level started swelling in in Vishwamitri River but was way below the danger mark.A three foot long crocodile crawling right next to the fountain in Sayajibaug was also rescued.Two fall in VMC dug pitVadodara: Two persons including a child fell in a pit dug by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) in Nani Chhipwad near Champaner Darwaza. The pit was dug to repair a faulty water supply pipeline. The work was necessitated as the areas around the Champaner Darwaza were getting contaminated water.BJP councillor from the area, Vijay Pawar, said that the pit to repair the fault had not been closed and plastic barricades were put around it. “The barricades floated with water in the rain and the pit also got filled up. Two persons had to be rescued by locals,” said Pawar. One such incident has also been recorded on a CCTV in the area.Dabhoi stays on edgeVadodara: Dabhoi taluka residents spent an anxious Thursday as continuous downpour led to water level swelling in Dhadhar River. District collector Shalini Agrawal said that high alert was issued in five villages of Dabhoi taluka, but the water began receding by evening. Agrawal said that a team is monitoring all the talukas as there is forecast of heavy rains and MGVCL has been asked to deploy teams for restoring power.
