3000 policemen get smart cards

To streamline policing and administration, the police department has initiated a smart card project.City police commissioner Manoj Sashidhar distributed 3 ,163 smart cards to the cops of ranks from constable to assistant sub-inspectors in the city. “Even if I have to make an announcement, I can broadcast it through the app to all the 3,000 smart card holders and other cops who have the app on their phones. Kushal — a mobile application having all the details of these policemen was also launched at city police headquarters. I just have to click on the app to get all the details,” Shashidhar added.

Vadodara: Now, if a cop in the city meets with an accident, a simple QR code scanning of his smart card will be able to pull up details including his or her medical reports. Kushal — a mobile application having all the details of these policemen was also launched at city police headquarters. “The idea is to smoothen administration and make it transparent. The smart card has a QR code that can be scanned from any mobile phone and an RFID tag. A scan of the card will furnish all details about the cop concerned,” Shashidhar told TOI.He said that every cop issued a smart card has also been given a unique number that will remain linked to his or her identity for good. “Earlier, when we took attendance, each cop had to write down name and badge number. Now, they can register their attendance by simply scanning the card,” Shashidhar said. The card will also bear the cop’s photograph.“The Kushal app has every detail of cops, including their postings, service record, rewards, punishments and annual performance. It also has the complete medical history of every cop to ascertain their physical condition and ailments. I just have to click on the app to get all the details,” Shashidhar added. “Even if I have to make an announcement, I can broadcast it through the app to all the 3,000 smart card holders and other cops who have the app on their phones. We will post short videos on the app to train cops on policing issues,” he said.The cops will be able to access their service details and attendance records through the smart card and app. “This is the first-of-its-kind project in the country, to professionalize policing and administration,” Sashidhar said.
