High drama over Panchmahal district panchayat committees’ formation

A majority of ruling BJP members in the panchayat formed a group and elected the members to seven committees. The BJP Panchmahal district president sent a mandate to the party’s members with a list of members to be elected to the committees and the chairpersons of these committees. The party mandate was naming a committee member as the president too.“This takes away the right of the committee members to elect a president. Sources said that one of the major reasons for the discontent was that as per the rules, the committee members were elected by the panchayat. Later, the committee members chose a chairperson from amongst themselves.

Vadodara: High drama is taking place in the Panchmahal district panchayat over the appointment of members and chairpersons of different committees of panchayat.A majority of BJP members in the Panchmahal district panchayat had on Monday voted against a mandate by the party for appointment of members and chairpersons of various committees in the district panchayat.The ruling BJP members reiterated their commitment to the BJP, but rebelled alleging that they were not taken into confidence regarding the appointments. On Tuesday, several of these members who had got positions in committees were asked by the BJP to tender their resignations from the committees.The panchayat was to elect members to eight different committees on Monday. The BJP Panchmahal district president sent a mandate to the party’s members with a list of members to be elected to the committees and the chairpersons of these committees. During the general board meeting of the panchayat, however, majority of members did not go by the mandate.Only one of the eight committees was elected as per the mandate, while the members of the remaining committees were made by a majority of members on their own. Sources said that one of the major reasons for the discontent was that as per the rules, the committee members were elected by the panchayat. Later, the committee members chose a chairperson from amongst themselves. The party mandate was naming a committee member as the president too.“This takes away the right of the committee members to elect a president. If needed, the party could have done so at a later stage,” said a member.The biggest discontent, however, is over the fact that no consultation was done with the panchayat members for the appointments. This led to disgruntlement that was fanned by the schisms within the party in the district.
