Fourteen years ago when they took started making clay Ganesh, the concept of eco-friendly idols had little takers in the city. But a campaign started by Maharaja Fatehsingrao Museum has fast caught up with organizations that are now encouraging children to make clay Ganesh idols.On Sunday morning, over 300 children made clay idols of all shapes and sizes in a special contest organized by the museum. “Installing clay idols helps conserve nature and keeps our water bodies clean. These kids are getting the lessons at the right age,” said Manda Hingurao, curator, Maharaja Fatehsingrao Museum.Royal scion Samarjitsinh Gaekwad gave away prizes to the winners. Another organization, Social Responsibility Foundation (SRF) too has been promoting eco-friendly Ganesh idols in the city for the last three years. “After making clay idols, these under-privileged children take them home for immersion. The idea is to teach them protecting environment,” said Shardul Patel, SRT’s founding member.The city police too has taken an initiative to promote eco-friendly Ganesh idols along with Chhatra Sansad this year. The under-privileged kids made 101 idols that will be distributed to pandals across the city. These idols were exhibited at a mall on Sunday evening.
