Ancient ruins in Godhra draw archaeologists

Vadodara: A day after ruins of an ancient structure surfaced in Godhra during the digging of ground for making a new sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) office, a team of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) visited the site.ASI Vadodara circle’s deputy superintending archaeologist Karabi Saha visited the spot on Sunday where the district administration had stopped the digging work after some fragments of an ancient structure had surfaced.“Our team which visited the spot noticed six to eight fragments of an ancient structure. They can continue work in the surrounding areas,” Anil Tiwari, superintending archaeologist of ASI Vadodara circle, told TOI.ASI officials have asked the officials in Godhra to keep aside the ruins which were recovered from the site.“We need to know whether this ancient architecture fragments were discarded or were part of some structure,” he said.The offices of the SDM as well as the Godhra executive magistrates are located near Mahakali Temple opposite Godhra sub-jail. Since the buildings were dilapidated, it was decided to construct new ones with better amenities.When work began at the site to dig the foundation, many were in for a surprise as a part of a stone pillar, another piece of stone with the figure of a woman carved on it and other materials had surfaced.
