Vadodara: Several main roads as well as lanes in the old city light up and remain illuminated through out the night these days.The police department has brought in light towers that have been installed at sensitive locations in the Walled City. The idea is to ensure that troublemakers don’t take advantage of the dark during Ganesh immersion processions and resort to some mischief.“We have installed these lights at some locations on the Ganesh immersion routes and lanes in the Walled City. Some of these areas required more illumination for security purpose. So we brought in 25 special light towers,” said Manish Singh deputy commissioner of police (HQ). These light towers run on diesel power generator and they are portable.Police said that sometimes during Ganesh immersion processions, mischief mongers turn off the street lights and resort to disturbance. Even a minor disturbance can snowball into communal riots. Last year, clashes had broken out in the the Walled City during the Ganesh procession of Pratap Marghani Pol. When the procession was heading towards the pandal, the street lights went off twice resulting in chaos on Mandvi Road.Within minutes of the lights going off, stones were pelted at the Ganesh procession and this sparked riotingout. Seven vehicles and a shop were torched. Investigations revealed that the rioting was a pre-planned conspiracy.Not wanting to take any chance, police will also be moving around in the sensitive areas to keep an eye on the happenings.Some of these tower lights have also been placed near the artificial lakes where Ganesh idols will be immersed this year.
