Vadodara: On Saturday evening, cyclists will turn up at the amphitheatre in Sayajibaug to celebrate the World Car Free Day.The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has organized a programme to celebrate the day jointly with ‘Cycling Cities’ to encourage citizens to use cycles for travelling short distances.“With rapid urbanization and improving standard of living, people have started buying vehicles. The number of cars is going up rapidly but we don’t have much space to drive or park them. If people start using cycles for travelling short distances or don’t use car for a day in the week, it will help a lot in not just reducing congestion but also air pollution,” said Nikita Lalwani of the Cycling Cities.During the two-hour programme, the participants will be asked to design their ideal cycling city. “The best of the ideas will get prizes. We want people to come up with ideas that can make the city more suitable for cycling,” Lalwani told TOI.“The participants will be told about the benefits and importance of cycling. Also, Sayajibaug will get a place for parking cycles,” Lalwani added. Lalwani has launched a cycling mobile application for promoting cycling in the city.“The user just has to download our app Cycling Cities on the mobile phone and start it while cycling. They will get points for every km they ride the cycle. The more the users ride, the more points they will get based on carbon credit calculations. These points will get them reward in terms of vouchers for cafes, discounts at cycling stores and even cash,” Lalwani, who is India’s first bicycle mayor, said.
