Vadodara: In a decision that hasn’t gone down well with many in the Godhra municipality, the BJP-led elected wing has decided to change the name of a 60-year-old garden christened after late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to that after Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The decision was taken at the general board meeting of the municipality on Thursday evening. A proposal to change the name was put before the municipality by ruling BJP councillor Nimesh Shah. It was taken up for consideration at Thursday’s meeting and passed by a majority vote. The garden named Nehru Baug is located near the Ramsagar pond and Shah proposed that this should be changed to Atal Udyan. The proposal was cleared with 30 councillors of the ruling group including 18 from the BJP voting in its favour and 14 from the opposition voting against it. The BJP has support of 12 independent councillors in the 44-member municipality. While objecting to the proposal, the opposition had argued that all the four new gardens coming up in the town could be named after Vajpayee. “It is not proper to change the name of a garden in such a manner. Both Nehru and Vajpayee were tall leaders and former prime ministers. We even said that four new gardens coming up in the city could be named after Vajpayee,” said Yakub Bakar, an opposition councillor.Bakar even said that the minority-dominated area of the town did not have a garden and a new one could be made there and named after Vajpayee. “But they passed the resolution to change the name,” he added.Godhra municipality president and BJP member Elendra Panchal said that the garden was in a state of neglect so far and being given a facelift. “We decided to give it a new name. This does not mean that we do not respect Nehru. There is no place in the town named after Vajpayee,” he said.Panchal added that if someone came up with a proposal of naming another place after Nehru, the municipality could consider it.
