City’s arterial roads were jam-packed and eateries did a brisk business. But this time, even as the immersions continued till late evening at newly made artificial pond at Navlakhi ground and several other ponds, the excitement among the devotees was clearly missing. Rain did not play a spoilsport this time, but the allocation of different routes and ponds to organizers on the basis of their areas dampened the mood. The atmosphere around Atladara and Gotri ponds, however, remained upbeat as many organizers from the western part of the city decided to immerse Ganesha idols over there. The festive fervour that centred around Sursagar pond for decades on the last day of Ganesha festivities was missing on Sunday, but thousands of devotees bid adieu to the elephant-headed God.Until last year, with loud DJ music accompanied by traditional trumpets that the organizers played in immersion procession coming out from the Walled City, the last day used to resemble a ‘mela’ around the heritage buildings of Laheripura, Nyay Mandir, Laal Court and the Sursagar pond itself. Immersions at Navlakhi ground ended early than anticipated as DJs were banned around the ground, but those at other ponds continued till late night as revellers grooved to the beats of DJ.No chaos were witnessed as different authorities including the police department, Vadodara Municipal Corporation and Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited had made temporary control rooms for smooth immersion process.
