Seven men from Bihar attacked for wearing ‘lungi’ in Gujarat

VADODARA: Even as state government and police are claiming that hate crime against migrant workers have stopped, a civil engineer and six plumbers from Madhubani district in Bihar were attacked by locals in Sama late on Monday night.Police, however, claimed that the attack had nothing to do with the victims’ origin. One of the three accused identified as Keyur Parmar was nabbed by cops on Tuesday.Civil engineer Shatrughan Yadav and the six plumbers are working at a construction site of a primary school of Vadodara Municipal Corporation . On Monday evening when Yadav and others were sitting outside the under-construction building, three Sama residents including Parmar came there and questioned him about his attire. Yadav and others were wearing a ‘lungi’.The trio got into argument with Yadav followed by a scuffle in which seven victims received minor injuries. Meanwhile, Yadav called police control room for help.As a PCR van came, the three assailants fled from there but threatened the migrants to leave the city. Later Yadav and the six plumbers went to Sama police station to lodge a case. When they returned, Yadav’s bike, which was given to him by the contractor, and two plastic chairs were set ablaze.Sensing the seriousness of the situation, the contractor living in Surat also rushed to city. “It is difficult to say what could be the reason for attack. They told the engineer and the workers that they have problem because they were ‘lungi’, which is very strange,” said the contractor Mayur Patel. He also alleged that after the bike and plastic chair were set on fire, the accused also threatened some 30 to 40 workers who were sleeping on first floor of the under-construction building.“The workers were asked to keep their mouth shut and leave from the site or else they would also be set on fire just like the bike,” Patel said.Sama police inspector PD Parmar said, “We have arrested one of the attackers, but the incident has nothing to do with hate crime against migrants. We are searching for other accused and they will be arrested soon.”“Since few days, locals had been warning them against sitting indecently wearing ‘lungi’, but they did not pay heed. On Monday night, the locals again argued with the migrants and clashed with them. Our investigations revealed that it was not a hate crime against migrants,” said police commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut.
