Vadodara: A 25-year-old labourer was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping and murdering a married woman in Karjan on November 8.Accused Bharmal alias Chauhan Vasava, a resident of Methi village in Karjan taluka, had raped a 40-year-old woman who lives in his village. He later killed the woman by smashing her head with a stone and fled away.The woman had left her house in the morning with cattle, but did not return. When the goats returned, the woman’s family members started searching for her. Her body was sighted on November 9 in a farm on the outskirts of the village by some locals who informed the sarpanch. Police said that after the woman’s family members identified her, a murder case was registered against an unidentified person.Postmortem revealed that the woman was raped before being murdered. Police interrogated villagers and family members of the woman which led to suspicion on Vasava.“The dog squad had indicated involvement of Vasava. Later, through our local sources, witnesses and circumstantial evidence we confirmed that it was Vasava who committed the crime. We arrested him on Tuesday,” said inspector M A Gadhvi of Karjan police station.During interrogation, Vasava told police that after raping the woman, he got scared and flustered. So he picked up a stone and smashed her head to kill her.
