VADODARA: A doctor from Chhota Udepur was arrested by Alirajpur police in Madhya Pradesh late on Wednesday night in connection with the child trafficking racket busted earlier this week.The accused Dr A Raju who runs Kesar Hospital in Chhota Udepur was rounded up by Madhya Pradesh police during the day for questioning. However, he was arrested late in the night.Police officials said that Dr Raju, an alumnus of Baroda Medical College, had sold an abandoned baby boy to the racket’s kingpin Shailendra Rathore. “The doctor came in contact with Rathore when the latter once went to his hospital for treatment. Rathore had asked Dr Raju to contact him if an abandoned child was found in his hospital,” said Vipul Shrivastava, superintendent of Alirajpur police.Shrivastava added that a couple had delivered a baby boy at Dr Raju’s hospital, but they had abandoned the child there. The same baby boy was later sold to Shambhu Purshottam Agrawal, a snacks shop owner in Vadodara, who has already been arrested.Cops have also hinted at the involvement of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers in the case.Sources said that the ASHA workers may not be involved directly in buying and selling of children, but would have provided information about pregnant women in the district.The racket was busted on November 11 when Prashant Dubey, a social activist from Madhya Pradesh, and a woman cop went to the kingpin Shailendra Rathore as a decoy couple to buy a baby boy. Besides the gang members, police have arrested Agrawal from Vadodara, Raju Agrawal, a BJP worker from Chhota Udepur and his relative.
