Vadodara: A year after a former BJP member committed suicide in Karjan, two moneylenders were booked for abetting his suicide and extortion, at Karjan police station on Tuesday.The 35-year-old Pinakin Patel, who was former president of Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha’s Karjan unit, had committed suicide at his parents’ house in Kanthariya village in Karjan taluka on October 5, 2017 as he was under heavy debt.Pinakin had borrowed Rs 17 lakh at seven per cent interest from the accused Pravinsinh Ataliya and from another accused Bharatsinh Chavda, Patel had borrowed Rs 19 lakh at 10 per cent interest. He had borrowed the money in 2011 to buy land in Karamdi village in Karjan in partnership with Satish ‘Nishaliya’ Patel, who later became MLA from Karjan.Pinakin’s father Rasik told police that his son was paying money to the accused. But the duo started taking interest on interest and penalty for unpaid amount due to which the debt kept on increasing. Pinakin later sold his share of land to Nishalya and paid money to the duo, yet they claimed that he has to pay more money to them.In 2016, Pinakin’s father sold his land and gave him Rs 46 lakh to pay the duo. But even after that they continued demanding money. Later Pinakin too sold his land in Shinor and paid Rs 75 lakh to Ataliya and Chavda. However, the demand for money continued. Tensed by the continuous demand of money and his inability to pay more, Pinakin committed suicide.Few days after his death, when Rasik checked Pinakin’s diary, it came to light that he had paid Rs 1 crore to Ataliya and Rs 1.2 crore to Chavda. The accused had even taken away his other pieces of land and office in Karjan.After Pinakin’s death, police had registered a case of accidental death. But as Rasik was not satisfied by the probe, he recently submitted an application to senior police officials of Vadodara rural police and a case was registered on Wednesday. The local crime branch is investigating the case.
