Groups clash over laying of paver blocks in temple

Vadodara: Two groups belonging to same community clashed at Khanderao Temple on RV Desai Road on Saturday morning over laying of paver blocks in the temple’s compound.Four persons were arrested for rioting and stone pelting which resulted in injuries to two men.Police said Shree Rajasthan Metal Merchants’ Welfare Association Trust, which owns the land of the temple, had undertaken the work of laying paver blocks in the compound of the temple. The accused started thrashing the complainant Rajesh Shah and other members of his community.As the victims started running helter-skelter, the accused began to throw stones due to which Shah received injuries on head. In the past too, the accused had tried to claim ownership over the temple and the issue reached the court. Meanwhile, cops from Navapura police station reached there and arrested Pandya, Kaushik, Shana and Raiji.

The work was being done as the trust had a community gathering in the coming days at a hall which also exists within the premises.On Saturday morning, a mob of 11 people identified as Abhay Pandya, Shana Mali, Kaushik Mali, Raiji Mali, Lala Mali, Jagdish Mali, Dilip Mali, Anil Mali, Atul Mali, Suresh Mali and Raju Mali rushed to the temple premises raising objections to laying of the paver blocks. In the past too, the accused had tried to claim ownership over the temple and the issue reached the court. The court had passed judgment in favour of the trust and asked others to not claim any rights over the land of the temple besides praying there.“The accused had created issues some days ago too when the work just started, but today they resorted to violence as they had objections over the trust’s action. Their action was against the court’s order so we have registered a case of rioting against them and made some arrests,” said inspector D K Rao of Navapura police station.
