Decks cleared for a smarter city bus service

Vadodara: The city bus service operated by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) may become a tad more efficient. The bus stands for the city bus service will also have LED screens that will give details of the estimated time of arrival of buses and their routes. The board meeting of the Vadodara Smart City Development Ltd on Wednesday cleared the proposal identifying the vendor for the project after the third attempt. With no other means of public transport, the city bus service that has been upgraded as part of the Smart City initiative is the only public transport mode available in the city.Under ITMS, VMC proposes to have GPS and CCTV enabled buses. It proposes to come up with an algorithm that can help citizens with shortest route they can take to reach their destination.With the new system officials will be able to monitor the city bus service from the Central Command and Control Centre (CCCC).

The civic body is set to introduce the Intelligent Transit Management System (ITMS) in the buses as part of the Smart City project for urban mobility.The system will ensure real-time monitoring of the movement of buses by the civic body and, in the long run, can also be extended to the commuters.VMC officials said that ITMS was crucial to ensuring that the city bus service is efficient and those using it get timely information regarding the location and arrival of the bus they are looking for. With no other means of public transport, the city bus service that has been upgraded as part of the Smart City initiative is the only public transport mode available in the city.Under ITMS, VMC proposes to have GPS and CCTV enabled buses. The bus stands for the city bus service will also have LED screens that will give details of the estimated time of arrival of buses and their routes. Presently, the buses have GPS and only their movement can be monitored. The system does not factor in the punctuality of the system.The vendor for the system was decided only after three attempts. Hiccups during the first two attempts had led to delays.
