Fire safety check must for Vadodara malls

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court has directed a committee of officials to conduct a survey of 14 malls and multiplexes in Vadodara to check their compliance with the General Development Control Regulations (GDCR) norms, whether they provide enough parking space, and are well-equipped to tackle emergencies.A bench of acting Chief Justice Anant Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav has sought the survey report by December 20.The HC has ordered the exercise after a PIL filed through advocate Hasit Dave complained that the new malls and multiplexes in the city of Vadodara have not adhered to the norms in the constructions permissions granted to them. They have not left mandatory margin spaces on three sides of buildings making it almost impossible for the fire services to address any emergency. The HC ordered inclusion of a Class-I officer from Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) as well as a representative of the petitioner in the committee.The HC ordered the committee to undertake a survey of the actual status of construction and any illegal or irregular construction, pakka or kaccha, made on the structure sanctioned according to Building Use (BU) permission. The committee will further inquire whether adequate safety measures have been adopted in these buildings to meet with any emergent situation, whether they have enough parking space for visitors and will probe whether the constructions are in violation of any GDCR norms.
