Vadodara: India’s first railway university – National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI) – was dedicated to the nation by Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani in presence of railway minister Piyush Goyal at a function organized at National Academy of Indian Railway (NAIR) campus here on Saturday.NRTI, a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has already started functioning temporarily from NAIR from September 5 – Teachers’ Day – with the first batch of 103 students from 20 states of the country getting enrolled in two fully-residential undergraduate courses.Goyal said while NRTI has started functioning from NAIR, Indian Railways has received 100 acres land from Gujarat Government to set up a full-fledged campus of the railway university.“We already have 100 acres land allotted to us by Gujarat Government. The site of Sports University which Gujarat Government is setting up at Desar is also being explored,” he said.He added that in the next five years, Rs421 crore will be invested in developing the campus of the railway university.Earlier, in his speech, he stressed that like NAIR, the new campus of the railway university should be an integrated campus that provided a conducive ambience for education with open spaces around and a culture that promoted knowledge sharing.To a query raised by TOI, Goyal said since the High Speed Rail Training Institute (HSRTI), which is being set up for bullet train project, is also coming up at NAIR, the Indian Railways is exploring an integrated campus approach.“If we have campuses nearby, the faculties who come at one institute, can share their knowledge with the other institute as well.
