Vadodara: MS University’s decision to appoint a junior teacher from Polytechnic College’s civil engineering department as the university engineer has kicked up a controversy on the campus. In the last syndicate meeting, members approved Rudresh Sharma’s appointment as the university engineer. The appointment of a temporary teacher at the Polytechnic College to the post of head of the construction department of the university, has, however, not gone down well with a section of the people. They feel that Sharma’s selection to the coveted post is contriving norms especially when there are several senior teachers and experts available in the civil engineering departments of both Polytechnic College and the Faculty of Technology and Engineering (FTE).However, in-charge registrar of MSU, NK Ojha, who has served as the university engineer, too, defended Sharma’s appointment. “We had deliberately kept 40 years as the maximum age limit for the candidates so that whoever gets selected for the post can serve for a longer period. We cannot afford to keep changing people on this post frequently,” Ojha explained, adding that the entire process was carried out in a free and fair manner. Trying to create an unnecessary controversy now is useless as those who feel that they could were more eligible for the post, should have applied for it first, he said.“When I was selected as the university engineer, I was of that age group and, therefore, could serve on the post for more than two decades,” he added.According to Ojha, six candidates, including two from MSU’s construction division, had applied for the post after the university issued a notification about the vacancy. Besides a written test, the university also conducted personal interviews of the candidates conducted by a retired superintending engineer from Roads and Buildings Department as an external expert.
