VADODARA: The threat to kidnap his son and demand of Rs 25 lakh ransom received by a Waghodia-based businessman has turned out to be a conspiracy hatched by his own cousin brother.The detection of crime branch (DCB) arrested 27-year-old electronics and communication engineer Deep Patel who had pasted anonymous threat letters on the bungalow of his cousin to extort the big amount . Patel was arrested after Monday night and he has confessed to writing the threatening letters as he was dire need of money.Patel had hatched a detailed plan to demand ransom money from his cousin brother who is a well-to-do businessman.He first typed an anonymous letter demanding Rs 25 lakh and dropped it at the cousin’s bungalow on February 13. In the letter, he threatened to kidnap his son if the ransom was not paid. The complainant then approached the crime branch that decided to set up a trap.On February 13, the complainant went to Wadi area where Patel had asked him to hand over the cash. But the accused didn’t turn up at the spot and instead dropped another anonymous letter at his house. “In the second letter, Patel wrote that he was aware that the complainant has contacted cops. He again threatened to kill the complainant’s son and claimed that he had even hired a contract killer,” said Jaydeepsinh Jadeja, deputy commissioner of police (crime).In the second letter, Patel asked the complainant to hand over the cash under the Lalbaug over-bridge on February 18. “In fact, the letter stated that the complainant should hand over the cash to Deep Patel who would then give it to the kidnapper. Patel hatched a plan to take the cash and siphon off all the money,” said Jadeja.The complainant, who has two children aged five and seven years, said that Patel had earlier borrowed some money from him, but returned it too.Patel told us that after completing his education from SVIT college, he started his own firm. But he suffered losses and had debt to repay. Also, we learnt that he had lost over Rs one lakh in online betting games.
