Vadodara: Every Sunday, Ali Asgar Vohra and his wife Rukaiah get up early in the morning and visit different areas of the city between 8 and 12 pm. The couple installs sparrow nests outside homes and gives guidelines to people for ensuring that sparrows come there to nest.On Wednesday, Vohra will distribute sparrow nests in Faculty of Science, M S University and distribute saplings to celebrate the World Sparrow Day.“Many people want to install sparrow nests in their home but they don’t have much idea about it. We go to such homes and spread awareness about conserving sparrows. We distribute nests and educate people about how to install them, at what height and in which direction,” Vohra, who had done his dissertation on sparrow nests during his MSc, told TOI. He also tells them what should be fed to sparrows.Nilam Tailor, a resident of Yagnapurush Residency, in Harni too has been making efforts to conserve sparrow at her home since last three years. “I have three sparrow nests in my home and the little birds has nested in them. I have kept a bird feeder and also ensure that the nests remain in cool place during summers,” Tailor told TOI. Her family members who stay in other city often video call her to see the sparrows at her home. Even young school kids are making efforts to conserve sparrows. Students of St Kabir International School have not just installed sparrow nests but also prepared a documentary on nesting of sparrows in their homes.
