NHRC notice to Guj govt for failing to protect agate workers

Vadodara: State government’s failure to implement suggestions of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to protect health of agate workers has invited flak.The human rights body has sent a notice to the state government to give an explanation within six weeks for not implementing its suggestions. When the commission met on February 12 this year, it sent the notice to the state government. It was in December 2017 that the NHRC had asked the state government to implement six suggestions for the health of agate workers in the state.The state government should stop agate cutting and polishing work in residential areas, set up a welfare board for agate workers and levy cess on production, sale and export of agate and prohibit residential electricity connection for commercial purposes. The state government was also asked to reframe the scheme on the lines of Haryana to give compensation to silicosis victims.Chief secretary to the state government was asked in January last year to submit a report by March 2018 regarding implementation of its suggestions, but no report was submitted.
