A 54-year-old female resident of Vadodara, became probably the first patient in Gujarat, to get the antibody cocktail therapy last week. Another couple in Vadodara too took the shots for speedy recovery this weekend. The entire family of this husband-wife duo had tested positive of the virus.

Antibody cocktail shots — an combination injection that was pushed into the limelight after former US president Donald Trump was administered one last year — has become the latest addition in treatment of Covid-19 positive patients in Gujarat.

A 54-year-old female resident of Vadodara, became probably the first patient in Gujarat, to get the antibody cocktail therapy last week. Another couple in Vadodara too took the shots for speedy recovery this weekend. The entire family of this husband-wife duo had tested positive of the virus.

“After I tested positive, my energy levels had gone down and I felt weak. But now my energy levels have improved significantly and I am also not having any side effects,” said 42-year-old Deepali Ramani, who was administered the injection on Saturday.

While Deepali, whose oxygen level was fluctuating, was kept under 72 hours’ observation, her husband – Pritesh Ramani – was discharged within hours on Sunday after being administered the shot.

“After I tested positive, I was very frightened. But our doctor informed us that antibody cocktail treatment is now available even in our country. We had no clue about this, but are happy with the results,” said Pritesh, 46, who is in the chemical industry.
“The couple wanted to have speedy recovery as three other members in their family including their parents and son have also tested positive,” said infectious disease specialist Dr Hiten Kareliya.

“Both the patients were administered the injections within five days of onset of Covid symptom. We treated the husband on OPD basis. Earlier, he had fever but now he is feeling better. Wife’s oxygen level which was fluctuating between 93 to 94 has now reached 99,” said Kareliya.

Like Deepali, oxygenation of a 54-year-old Covid-19 positive female patienttoo has improved significantly within hours after taking a combination of casirivimab and imdevimab.

“After she had tested positive, the patient had come to us with her oxygen level fluctuating between 92 and 94. Since her son-in-law was from United States, he could understand what a cocktail means. So, it was not difficult for us to convince them. Plus, they were ready to bear the expenses which comes to Rs 55,000 to Rs 60,000 per patient per therapy,” said Dr Aman Khanna, managing director of a private hospital in the city.

“The patient, first in Vadodara and probably first in Gujarat, to undergo cocktail treatment, is absolutely fine. Her oxygenation has gone up to 97-98 and her vitals are stable,” Dr Khanna said.
