Gujarat: `Theft suspect" dies in police custody

Vadodara, Aug 24 (PTI) A man detained on suspicion of being a thief died while in police custody in Gujarat"s Vadodara district on Wednesday, an official said.A resident of the area, however, claimed that the deceased was his guest and had lost his way when some local people caught him on suspicion.Police received a call early in the morning that a man had been caught while committing theft at a residential society at Sevasi on the outskirts of Vadodara city, said a police official.A police team visited the spot and took the man, identified as Bhupendra Solanki (40), to the Vadodara tehsil police station, he said."At the police station his health deteriorated. He was rushed to a government hospital in Vadodara where the doctors declared him dead," the official added.Solanki was a resident of Dama Pura village in the district, he said.Autopsy report will throw light on whether he had been beaten up by the people which caused his death or there was some other health complication, the official added.But a resident of the area claimed that Solanki was innocent.Solanki was visiting him, and had stepped out of the house on Tuesday night for buying cigarettes and lost his way when he was caught, he said.No stolen valuable was recovered from the deceased"s possession, he said, demanding a thorough inquiry.
