VARANASI: After the Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death sentence for the four Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder convicts, her grandfather Lalji Singh expressed his trust in the judiciary and also his wish to see the execution of the convicts in his lifetime.“My only wish is to see them hanged before I die,” said Singh, a resident of Ballia's Medaura Kalan village.Nirbhaya (23), a paramedic student and resident of Ballia district, was gang-raped on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 in a running bus in South Delhi by six persons and assaulted severely before being thrown out of the vehicle. She succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Singapore on December 29, 2012.“It is a matter of satisfaction that the court upheld capital punishment for them, but it is too late to get justice. There should be speedy trail to punish such persons,” said Singh adding that the verdict had already come earlier, but the convicts are still alive. “I will die with peace if I see them executed in my lifetime,” he added.The apex court in its May 2017 verdict had upheld the capital punishment awarded to four convicts by the Delhi high court. The review petition of three of the four convicts was rejected by the SC. The fourth convict has not yet filed a review petition against the apex court’s May 5, 2017 verdict. One of the accused had allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar jail during the trial. A juvenile accused was convicted by a juvenile justice board, and was released from a reformation home after serving a three-year term.
